Read on for a 10-Day Itinerary covering three of Australia’s capital cities — Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. With a mix of trendy city vibes, gorgeous coastlines and unique island experiences, you’ll never have a more action-packed week and a half!
Melbourne consistently ranks as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and after spending a couple of days here it’s not hard to see why. Melbourne Central YHA will be your base and is conveniently located only minutes walk from Southern Cross Station.
Take some time to relax with a coffee in a hidden café, visit contemporary galleries and check out Melbourne’s unique street art. Stop at one of hundreds of restaurants for lunch. In the evening take advantage of the city’s many wine bars, clubs, and pubs. Sports fans can’t miss an AFL game at the historic MCG.
Settle in to Apollo Bay Eco YHA, a stylish and comfortable eco-certified hostel situated midway along the famous Great Ocean Road. Climb aboard a surfboard or kayak, get up close to local seal colonies or sign up for a deep sea fishing adventure. Fishing is an important local industry so seafood is always on the menu at the local cafes and restaurants.
Apollo Bay is a nature lover's haven with deserted beaches, rainforest, abundant wildlife and the amazing natural sights along the iconic Great Ocean Road. Take a day to visit the 12 Apostles — an absolute must-see and one of the world’s most stunning stretches of coastline!
South Australia’s capital packs some serious street cred. From free bike hire, the largest selection of food trucks in the country, the must-visit Adelaide Central Market and the rapidly expanding small bar scene, you can see why the locals call it ‘Radelaide’.
Make Adelaide Central YHA Backpacker your base and take a day and head out to the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley, a one hour drive away. Visit quaint art galleries and world-class vineyards such as Penfolds and Jacob’s Creek, while enjoying the region’s gorgeous landscape and gourmet wining and dining.
You will never forget your visit to Kangaroo Island. Meet Australian sea lions on the beach, kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, penguins, echidnas and diverse birds. Discover rugged rock formations, underground caves, bush-cloaked national parks, and beaches and bays to swim, snorkel and dive.
Port Lincoln YHA is based in an adventure-lover's paradise. Whether it's shark cage diving, swimming with sea lions or maybe a surf or a swim, this town can deliver!
Perth scores a trifecta with its prime river-front vantage, proximity to sun-drenched coastline and faraway wine country. Pristine beaches, streets lined with trendy bars and cafes and loads of outdoor activities are only a few reasons why the west is best! Award-winning Perth City YHA is the perfect base to explore this far-flung capital. If you'd rather sleep closer to the beach, try out the Fremantle Prison YHA instead.
While in Perth, make time for a day trip to Rottnest Island. This island, a 30 minute ferry ride away, features spectacular snorkelling sites, 63 beaches, the famous Wadjemup walk trail, and some very welcoming quokkas.
