Port Macquarie Is A 4.5 Hour Drive From Sydney And Is Well Worth The Drive. The Town Boasts Some Of The Best Surfing Beaches On The East Coast Of Australia, A Koala Hospital And Is Surrounded By Rainforest.
Since recently moving to Sydney, New South Wales, I have been told by a number of locals that Port Macquarie is a getaway destination not to be missed. Port Macquarie is a 4.5 hour drive from Sydney and is well worth it. The town boasts some of the best surfing beaches on the East Coast of Australia, a koala hospital and is surrounded by rainforest.
On a sunny Friday afternoon in October, Dave and I decided to hit the road and find out for ourselves. A few classic mix-CDs and some greasy take-away later, we and I found ourselves pulling up at Ozzie Pozzie YHA – eager to check in and explore.
The hostel manager, Richard was a friendly tanned local who was told us all of the ‘must-see’ places around town. Bright and early on Saturday, we started off with a whale-watching tour with Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures.
While it was towards the end of the whale watching season (June-November), we saw two incredible whales that were quite relaxed around 20 over-excited tourists. As soon as we hit land after the cruise, Dave and I relaxed on the wharf judging which of us had photographed the best ‘whale tale’, before gearing up to visit the renowned koala hospital.
Run by volunteers, the Koala Hospital and Study Centre is made up of outdoor enclosures surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Visitors are free to roam around the grounds and see the koalas rehabilitating after accidents or illness. If you head to the centre in the afternoon, make sure you don’t miss the 3pm hospital tour.
If you are looking for a ‘hot-spot’ for your Saturday night, head down to the Port Macquarie Hotel for some great beats and karaoke. Sunday morning was spent lying around on Flynns beach – so beautiful that you will never want to leave. It really was the perfect, fun-filled weekend in Port Macquarie.
The great thing about Port Macquarie is that everything is quite close if you have a car or bike. Therefore, Dave and I had no issues getting around to all of the hot-spots that afternoon, including the rainforest at Sea Acres Nation Park, Tackling Point Lighthouse and Shelly Beach.
As the sun set on our action-packed Saturday, we decided to get to know the other fellow travellers staying at Ozzie Pozzie YHA. This hostel is like no other. Bright coloured wall murals, pool-side hammocks, a ping-pong table, BBQ, and Cheeky – the famous parrot!
Like my friends said, Port Macquarie is a destination not to be missed. They were right.
