Boomalli Gallery NSW

Boomalli “to strike or make a mark” - Est. Sydney NSW, 1987

Boomalli is a unique arts space in Sydney, being the only Aboriginal owned gallery dedicated to supporting New South Wales artists. Boomalli is a Co-operative with over 60 artist members based in Sydney and regionally.

Boomalli has been the launching pad for many high profile artists since its inception, although the Co-operative very much remains a grass roots organisation dedicated to supporting artists from all career levels, with a mentoring framework where artists can learn and be inspired by each other.
Boomalli is a home and community space for their artists. They host a regular exhibition program which consists of 4 - 5 exhibitions a year. Many artists work and create at Boomalli’s studio spaces located at their gallery in Leichhardt.

Most commercial galleries charge up to 50% commission on artists’ work, Boomalli charges 33%. Boomalli artists set the prices, and the commission Boomalli applies to their work goes back to supporting and providing mentorship to their artists, the delivery of our ongoing programs/exhibitions and simply just keeping our space open.

Boomalli provides professional development for our artists through assistance with contracts and negotiations around the use and presentation of their work. Visiting Boomalli is a great way to support local Aboriginal artists, purchase and learn about their work, and be exposed to unique opportunities to learn about Aboriginal art and culture from NSW.

We recommend a visit to the gallery - keep an eye out for their exhibition openings and the opportunity to meet the artists and be immersed in a creative arts community based here in Sydney! Sydney has so many amazing commercial arts spaces and cultural institutions that showcase and sell Aboriginal art, but by visiting Boomalli and purchasing a work or small items from their shop, you ensure you are directly supporting the local Aboriginal community, and the proceeds from sales are going back to their artists and their families.

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative was established in 1987 by ten founding member artists. They were Euphemia Bostock, Fiona Foley, MichaelRiley (dec.), Tracey Moffatt, Jeffrey Samuels, Bronwyn Bancroft, Avril Quaill,Fern Martens, Arone Meeks (dec.), and Brenda L. Croft. These ten artists werestriving for recognition from the mainstream art society and their diversity wasunparalleled. They challenged preconceptions around urban based AboriginalArtists and created a unique space for themselves within the art world.

Boomalli continues to survive 35 years later and is committed to promoting andsupporting artists from New South Wales Aboriginal language groups.Boomalli’s artistmembers are based in Sydney and in regional areas of New South Wales. Boomalli provides a space for our artists to exhibit, work and tell their stories through their art.
