Building YHA’s future from the ground up

YHA is continuing to innovate, blending technology, sustainability and modern design to reshape shared travel spaces and deliver on our 2030 property strategy. Across the network, new developments are positioning the business at the forefront of a changing travel landscape that values connection, comfort, and community.
At the centre of this transformation is Railway Square, a five-storey, next-generation property being built within the landmark Atlassian Central Tower in Sydney and set to open in 2027.
In a major milestone, 2025 saw the concrete flooring poured, laying a new foundation for YHA, both literally and strategically. Railway Square will blend social design and modern hospitality, with collaborative spaces, a climbing wall, local art partnerships and even a microbrewery. Advanced digital systems will make for seamless guest experiences from booking, to check-in, to check-out.
“The tower itself is well underway. All our prototype rooms are complete, our façade is enclosed, and by April our floors will be complete. Practical completion for the entire tower is targeted for November next year,” says YHA Head of Development Sam Owen.
“We’ve been testing new joinery, furniture, and bunk designs at YHA Sydney Harbour, plus installing self-check-in pod stations. Those act as prototypes for the new Railway Square property, the property of the future.”
The reopening of the Hobart Town Hotel, a complete food and beverage redevelopment managed in-house for the first time, marks another milestone in YHA’s evolution.
“Originally a light touch, it became a full fit-out. That included a new commercial kitchen, all new services, joinery, and a brand-new bar. Not only does it look great, but the Hobart Town Hotel launch shows our food and beverage offering has really matured,” adds Sam.
Renovations are also planned for YHA Adelaide Central from 2026, continuing the organisation’s commitment to modernising its network.
Behind every project sits a clear strategy to improve, innovate, and reinvest. As a not-for-profit organisation, YHA channels revenue back into its network to enhance sustainability, accessibility, and the member experience.
With new prototypes, partnerships, and projects underway, YHA’s development pipeline is not just about building places to stay. It is about creating spaces to connect, experience, and belong.
