Introducing Schirrmo’s: A refreshing new addition to the Sydney bar scene from YHA
This week, YHA Australia is excited to announce the launch of its latest hospitality venture, Schirrmo’s Bar. This exciting new basement venue is located right next door to our Sydney Central property, and represents our latest move towards bringing more people together in spaces across Australia.
Once known as Scubar, the space has lay empty for two years. Thanks to YHA, it has undergone a transformation from a backpackers’ dive into an eclectic underground hideaway that’s part traveller hangout, part speakeasy. It’s now a space where locals and travellers alike can swap stories and enjoy a drink in a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere.
Schirrmo’s Bar was inspired and named in honour of the great pioneer of the hostelling movement, Richard Schirrmann, who fought for friendship and harmony across borders, even in the face of wartime oppression. These ideals are still embodied today by YHA Australia and the global Hostelling International network.
“Guests choose to stay at YHA properties to meet people and have unique experiences.” says Sam Owen, YHA Head of Development, Food & Beverage. “This is an exciting time for YHA as it allows us to create an inviting atmosphere, and give our travellers another space to connect.”
Schirrmo’s Bar will be helmed by Venue Manager Simon Fraser, a veteran of the hospitality industry.
“It’s really great to be a part of the revitalisation of the Sydney nightlife scene, especially in a central area like Haymarket. Schirrmo’s will provide a fun and friendly watering hole for not only travellers staying at the YHA, but also the after-work crowd and drop-ins who’ve missed the tram home.” says Fraser.
YHA now operates independent bars in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with a vision of licencing all major properties in the near future.
Schirrmo’s Bar is located at 4/11-23 Rawson Place, Haymarket, NSW 2000 and is currently open on Wednesday-Saturday weekly.
