Perth City YHA is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and being a responsible community member through a mix of heritage conservation and environmental sustainable practices and services.

Initiatives include:

Energy/Greenhouse Gas Reduction:

  • PV solar system 37kW PV Solar Panel System on the roof that generates about 190kWh per day, a saving of approximately 20% of the total power bill and reducing the carbon output by approximately 40 metric tons per annum (partly funded by the YHA Sustainability Fund)
  • Low energy (LED) lighting used throughout the hostel
  • Key card activation of lighting and air-conditioning in private rooms
  • Unused computers and monitors turned off at night

The saving with the use of the solar system is equal to a carbon footprint saving about 39 tonnes of CO2 per annum – equivalent to eliminating the carbon footprint of 7x average WA’s household´s annual electricity consumption.

Waste Minimisation:

  • Recycling station in kitchen
  • Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, batteries, clothing and printer cartridges
  • Dedicated recycle area for guests to leave things they don’t need but other people might
  • Use of partially recycled paper in office
  • Sell refillable water bottles and fabric shopping bags

 Water Saving Measures:

  • Water efficient taps and showers
  • Dual flush toilets
  • Signage in bathrooms encouraging guests to minimise water usage
  • Signage in rooms to encourage guests to turn off the lights and air conditioning
  • Front loader washing machines
