Things to do in Canberra City YHA

More centrally located than any Dickson hostel, the YHA is the perfect base to explore Australia's capital and its many free attractions. Visit the National Museum of Australia, Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, and Questacon. Walk or picnic beside Lake Burley Griffin, and enjoy views from Telstra Tower or Mount Ainslie. Canberra plays host to plenty of festivals during the year, including Floriade, Multicultural Festival, Balloon Fiesta, and International Film Festival.

Canberra Overnight Tour

Canberra is more than just Australia's capital city, with world class museums and galleries galore, this trip covers all the highlights.

World class attractions, amazing architecture and futuristic planning all play their part in making Canberra one of the world's most modern and progressive cities. 

This is the only small group day trip to Canberra so is far more personal and enjoyable than any other options, as well as being the only Canberra day trip to run on the weekend. 

Tours departs every Saturday at 7.30am from Sydney Central YHA Hostel and returns Sydney Central Station on Sunday at 6pm. 

Day 1 is a guided tour with day 2 being yours to explore on your own leisure. Option also for a 1 day tour which will return to Sydney approximately 9pm

FREE things to do in Canberra

  1. Visit National Museum of Australia and learn about Australia's social history, exploring the key issues, people and events that have shaped this country.
  2. Hike up Mt. Anslie (30 min from War Memorial) to see what a planned city looks like from above. You can spot the kangaroos at sunset and sunrise as well.
  3. Take a tour at the Australian Parliament House and observe democracy in action. Free tours run about 5 times a day, don’t forget to visit the roof top before you leave.
  4. Attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial and listen to the stories about Australian soldiers.
  5. Be inspired by a large collection of Australian aboriginal art works at the National Art Gallery.
  6. Visit the Old Bus Depot Market on Sunday and taste all the free sample that is available. If you are lucky, that could be your lunch.
  7. Check out The Bootleg Sessions at The Phoenix Bar every Monday night from 8pm for some live music performed by Canberra’s up & coming artists.
