Best free spots for views & local experiences

Start with a swim at the Bogey Hole, Newcastle’s iconic heritage-listed ocean bath, then follow the coastline towards Bar Beach and Merewether for beautiful ocean views. The Newcastle Memorial Walk is another must-do, with sweeping coastal views along a trail that commemorates the ANZACs.

For a dose of nature, head to Blackbutt Reserve, where you can explore bushland and spot native wildlife with free entry to the wildlife park. Back in the city, explore the Newcastle Museum to discover the city’s history and local stories, or grab a free surfboard or bodyboard from YHA Newcastle Beach and hit the waves.

For an easy evening walk, explore the coastline around Bar Beach and Merewether as the sun goes down, the path is beautifully lit up at night.
