Day 1 – Gunlom Falls
After a good night’s sleep at Darwin YHA, wake up early for the journey to Kakadu National Park. We travel the old Jim Jim Road, arriving at the beautiful White Lily Billabong in time for morning tea, before heading to Gunlom Falls for a hike to the top of the waterfall. Enjoy spectacular views while you swim in the refreshing pools, sit back and relax on the sandy beach at the base of the falls or dive into the natural plunge pool. This place is so magical we set up camp for the night by the waterfall away from all the crowds. (L, D)
Day 2 – Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge)
Spend the whole day exploring Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), a place so exclusive only 40 visitors a day are allowed to visit. Learn about why this gorge is so special to the Indigenous Dreamtime story – the name ‘Jarrangbarnmi’ comes from the local Aboriginal words ‘jarrang’, meaning flood or big water flow, and ‘barn’, meaning rift or gap – and be amazed by the tale of how this place was formed. It’s a challenging hike up through the gorge but you’re rewarded with jaw-dropping rock pools, waterfalls and rocky landscapes. After a spectacular day we make our way back to our camp at Gunlom Falls for a campfire dinner. (B, L, D)
Day 3 – Kakadu National Park
Take the entire day to hike, explore and swim in the beautiful waterholes of Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). Our guide will reveal a few secret swimming holes, including a secret underwater network of interconnected pools among the rocks that flow into a small lake. Tonight we stay at our exclusive safari camp at Garnamarr, at the base of the escarpment. (B, L, D)
Day 4 – Twin Falls and Jim Jim Falls
After breakfast we get our 4WD on and head to Twin Falls. Climb the escarpment to the top of the falls for a swim in the secluded crystal clear pools. A short climb up Budjimi Lookout rewards you with breathtaking views of the ancient Arnhemland Escarpment. After lunch, take a 1km hike through a monsoonal vine forest to the base of Jim Jim Falls to enjoy a relaxing afternoon of swimming and chilling out on the beach. All that exercise will work up an appetite and you’re in for a treat at our camp at Mardugal, with a Great Aussie BBQ including crocodile, buffalo and kangaroo. (B, L, D)
Day 5 – Nourlangie Rock and Corooboree Billabong
This morning we visit Nourlangie Rock, an ancient Aboriginal art site, before walking up to Gunwhardewharde lookout for dazzling views across Arnhemland as well as a stop at the Bowali Information Centre. On the road back to Darwin, we’ll witness the incredible birdlife at the Mamakala Wetlands then make one final stop at the stunning Corroborree Billabong for a wildlife cruise, which provides a great opportunity to get some happy snaps of the native Aussie animals. Then it’s sadly time to say goodbye to Kakadu National Park as we head back into Darwin. (B, L)
Kakadu National Park and its surrounds are a beautiful, remote and wild place. We’ll try to follow the itinerary but some sights are seasonal and can change at any time due to weather conditions and cultural significance. Access to Twin and Jim Jim Falls cannot be guaranteed. If we are unable to access the falls they will be substituted with something just as awesome.
