It is an early start today so we can get out and explore the spectacular Litchfield National Park. Litchfield is deserving of its hype. Enjoy exploring this unique part of the world with a hike around the rugged sandstone escarpments and swim in the beautiful spring fed streams and spectacular waterfalls. We also get to see the amazing cathedral and magnetic termite mounds which can reach as high as 6 metres. After our visit to Florence Falls and Wangi Falls we enjoy a picnic lunch before we hit the outback 4WD trackstaking us deep into Kakadu National Park. Enjoy the beautiful scenery on the drive past billabongs and traversing water crossing as well as spotting the abundant wildlife. Arrive into our campsite and settle in for the night in comfortable permanent tents. (L, D)
Day 2 – Kakadu National Park
This morning we take off on an Aboriginal owned and operated Yellow Waters Cruise This spectacular billabong system is home to some of Australia’s most diverse wildlife and gives us a chance to view the wild Saltwater Crocodiles in their natural environment.
Next up we travel to Nourlangie Rock which has an amazing history with over 20,000 years of Aboriginal occupation at the site. See this history drawn out in the spectacular rock paintings which tell the local Aboriginal story. After lunch learn more about the local Aboriginal Culture at the Bowali Visitor Centre
Later this afternoon we arrive at Ubirr. Here you will see a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art and learn the dreamtime stories of how the Aboriginal people view this great land was formed. We spend this morning at Katherine Gorge which is a beautiful serene place. We have time to hire a canoe and paddle along the gorge or for a more relaxing experience you can take a cruise (both activities at your own expense). You can also choose to walk along the sheer rock walls that make this area so spectacular.
After lunch we enjoy the Top Didj Cultural Experience and are in contact with the local artists.
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end as we head back to Darwin. You will be left with amazing memories and new friends. (B, L)
Kakadu National Park and its surrounds are a beautiful, remote and wild place. We will endeavour to follow the itinerary but please note some sights are seasonal and are subject to change at any time due to weather conditions and cultural significance. Access to Twin and Jim Jim Falls cannot be guaranteed. If we are unable to access the falls they will be substituted with an alternative such as Barramundi Gorge
