Check into Darwin YHA and get ready for your epic adventure

Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu National Park 

  • Your Top End adventure begins with a Mary River Wetlands for our cruise; Home to over 250 bird species and the highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Enter Kakadu National Park and enjoy a yummy Picnic lunch at the South Aligator River.
  • Learn the story of the Rainbow Serpent at Ubirr, a rock formation famous for it's incredible rock art.
  • Climb the Nadab Lookout for panoramic views over the floodplain and beyond into Arnhem Land. 
  • Finish the day at a private campsite and enjoy a delicious dinner.

 Day 2: Kakadu National Park

  • After breakfast, travel off road to the majestic Twin and Jim Jim Falls for a day of adventure and exploration.
  • Travel into Twin Falls by 4WD track, a boat shuttle and finally a rocky track to be rewarded by the beauty of a remote waterfall deep within Kakadu National Park.
  • Walk through monsoon forests and over boulders to Jim Jim Falls.
  • Soak up the natural beauty of this majestic location, surrounded by epic 150 metre high cliffs.
  • Stay tonight at a private campsite, enjoy a hearty meal with your fellow adventurers.

 Day 3: Litchfield National Park

  • Explore waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rugged sandstone escarpments of Litchfield National Park
  • Marvel at the intriguing magnetic and cathedral termite mounds
  • Swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls
  • Discover the many rock holes and cascading waterfalls of Buley Rockhole 
  • Spend tonight in Darwin (dinner not included)

Day 4: Darwin to Katherine Gorge National Park

  • Pick up from Darwin accommodation at approximately 6.00am to start your adventure through the ‘Territory’ towards Alice Springs
  • Spend an afternoon at Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park where ancient sandstone has been carved away by the Katherine River to create an epic gorge.
  • Take a boat cruise or canoe (seasonal) through the gorge (both optional and additional cost)
  • Camp overnight and enjoy a delicious meal with your group.

Day 5: Katherine Gorge to Banka Banka via Mataranka.

  • Start the day at the Mataranka Thermal Pools, a lush oasis fringed by paperbark trees.
  • Stop for a drink at the famous Daly Waters Pub, a great spot for a cold beer, and a bit of history
  • Finish the day at historic Banka Banka Cattle Station where you camp for the night.  

Day 6: Banka Banka to Alice Springs

  • Explore Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu); a collection of gigantic granite boulders magically balanced on top of one another.
  • Cross the Tropic of Capricorn (only 20% of the Northern Territory lays south of this point) 
  • Accommodation is at Alice Springs YHA

Day 7: Free day to explore Alice Springs

  • Explore the Red Centre township of Alice Springs at your leisure, or take a day tour out to the West Macdonnell Ranges
  • Accommodation tonight is at Alice Springs YHA
  • Meals not included

Day 8: Alice Springs to Uluru

  • Rise early to make the journey to Uluru
  • Embark on an interpretive base walk of Uluru
  • Visit the impressive cultural centre to learn about the Anangu people.
  • Watch the  changing colours of Uluru at sunset
  • After dinner, stories and stargazing, it’s time for a good night’s rest at a private campsite.

Day 9: Uluru to Kings Creek Station via Kata Tjuta

  • Wake early to experience a mesmerising Uluru sunrise (early mornings are a magical time in the desert!)
  • Explore Kata Tjuta, a group of large, domed rock formations. Named after the aboriginal word for 'many heads, of which there are 36!
  • Hike the breathtaking Valley of the Winds walk through creek beds, domes and beautiful wilderness.
  • Spend the night at a private camp at Kings Creek Station.

Day 10: Kings Canyon 

  • Enter Watarrka (Kings Canyon) an epic destination with 300 metre high sandstone walls, palm-filled crevices, and views that stretch across the outback.
  • Explore the iconic Kings Canyon Rim Walk; Suitable for relatively fit travellers, the first 500 steps of the Rim Walk is the most challenging, but the view from the top is completley worth it! 
  • The six-kilometre circuit will take you down into the Garden of Eden, a beautiful rockhole surrounded by rare plants, before ascending to 360 degree panoramic views over the red sand dunes.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch before beginning the journey back to Alice Springs, arriving in the early evening.

The Outback is a wild and remote place. We’ll try to follow the itinerary but some places are seasonal and can change at any time, so we may need to operate on the fly.  If we can’t get to certain places they will be substituted with something just as awesome.

This super fun adventure can be full on, so you need to be pretty fit – the hikes can be long, sometimes scrambling over rocks.  The weather can also be crazy hot and freezing cold, so a good level of fitness is pretty important

Cancellations:

Due to the discount offered and the structure of this package - it is non-refundable once confirmed.

Amendments:

Each amendment (not cancellation) to the original booking, after confirmation will incur a fee of $25 per person and per amendment.

Amendments are subject to availability.

  • Your credit card will be debited upon completion of the online booking process. Your booking is guaranteed once you receive a confirmation email from a YHA Travel & Tours consultant.
  • In the unlikely event we cannot confirm your booking, we will refund the total amount to the credit card with which payment has been made within 7 days. YHA Travel & Tours and its suppliers are not liable in the event a tour or package is not available, and any refunds are restricted to the purchase price of the tour or package booked.

Cancellations and Amendments

If you need to cancel or amend your booking, please notify us immediately by email. You can find the email contact details on your booking confirmation. Cancellation and change fees are outlined below:

Cancellations:

  • A minimum cancellation fee of $25 per booking will apply to all cancellations. This fee excludes tour operator fees which will vary at the discretion of the supplier/s involved.
  • Cancellations within 48 hours of the tour, activity, accommodation, transport item commencing will incur a 100% cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued.
  • No- shows/ failure to check- in for any tour, activity, accommodation, and/or transport item is considered a cancellation and a refund will not be issued.
  • Refunds are not available on unused portions of tour packages.

Amendments

  • Booking changes and amendments must be made 5 business days prior to the confirmed date of commencement for the tour, activity, accommodation, or transport item.
  • Booking changes and amendments to any booking made within 48 hours of the tour, activity, accommodation, and/or transport item may result in full cancellation and rebooking of each item and will therefore be charged full cancellation fees.
  • Each change/ amendment after confirmation will incur a minimum fee of $25 per person, per change/ amendment. This fee is in addition to any fees imposed by the tour operator which will vary in line with the cancellation and change terms and conditions of the tour operator involved.

 YHA Membership

This YHA Travel and Tours product is not restricted to YHA members and guests. You do not need to be a member or guest of YHA to purchase this product.

  • If there is accommodation included in this YHA Travel and Tours product and you are not already a member of YHA Australia, membership will be included as part as your first night’s stay
  • If you are an Australian resident, your membership is valid for 2 years from the month that you stay at your first YHA hostel in Australia. Your membership will renew automatically, unless you have not stayed in a YHA hostel in the past 24 months and have unsubscribed from all electronic communications.
  • If you are not an Australian resident, your membership is valid for 2 years from the month that you stay at your first YHA hostel in Australia.
