FREE things to do in Via ferry/water taxi from Church Point to Halls Wharf, then 15min walk uphill to hostel Pittwater, NSW 2105, Pittwater, NSW & ACT

  1. Bush walk to lookouts, aboriginal engraving sites and other bays of Pittwater
  2. Wildlife spotting: Wallabies often graze around the hostel; possums and bandicoots are out at night; birdlife is abundant; and goannas are amble across the terraces in warmer months.
  3. Sunrise walk – see the making sun from a sandstone rock shelf overlooking Pittwater and beyond to the Tasman Sea
  4. Full moon walk when timing coincides
  5. Mountain Bike the trails of the National Park (Yes, you can get here by mountain bike from West Head Road)
  6. Fishing – bring a fishing line and try for a king fish, a bream or a flathead
  • Must do activities: Kayaking in the warmer months is definitely a must. We went across the bay to a little beach. The kids got to look at the mangroves and crabs. Next time, we intend to go along the bay to find the waterfall. We also went for a little hike behind the YHA to these awesome boulders. It has fantastic views of the bay. We didn't go for long walks as we had 5/6 year old children with us. Transport As I'm from the Eastern Suburbs, it would have been quite a trek with backpacks and a 6-year old. So I opted to drive to Pittwater instead. I was lucky to find parking on Eastview Road (as suggested by the YHA) and there is no time limit. Alternatively, I understand there's parking about 10 minutes walk away from the ferry wharf (in the residential areas). The parking by the wharf is only 4 hours.

  • Must do some sailing. The hikes can offer spectacular views but a lot of it is walking along fire tracks. Look out for the wild life along the way. Try to get up to palm beach really nice.
    Grant F
  • Slow down before you get there, get in the groove early.
    Gary K
  • It can be hot in summer but you can always take a dip in one of the beaches. When we left it was a very high tide and the ferry walkway was under some water which was great to cool down.
    Philip T
