Pittwater YHA is committed to making a more sustainable planet. We aim to reduce our footprint through more sustainable practices. We Participate in Earth Hour each year, join the community for Clean Up Australia Day and want to see a more sustainable future! Some of our commitments include:

YHA Sustainability - Energy

Energy reduction:

  • Passive solar design means our hostel stays warm in winter and cool in summer
  • Low energy and timed lighting: no need for lights on in empty rooms
  • Promotion of public transport and free bike storage, the easiest way to be eco-friendly
  • We’ve just installed a solar hot water system to power your showers through sunlight!
YHA Sustainability - Waste

Waste minimisation:

  • Recycling stations in kitchens, common areas and office areas to recycle anything from printer cartridges or our 100% recycled paper, to tinnies of beer, clothes, and plastic containers
  • We feed our worms your rubbish! All Organic kitchen waste is composted on-site
  • Eco-friendly cleaning products for shiny hostels and a happy earth
YHA Sustainability - Water

Water Saving:

  • All our water needs, from toilets to watering the drought resistant garden are supplied by our rainwater tanks! On site rainwater tank supplies all water needs of the hostel
  • Dual flush toilets for ultimate bathroom break efficiency
  • Get educated with signage in bathrooms and kitchens encouraging guests to minimise water usage
YHA Sustainability - Social

 Social sustainability:

  • We’re proud to partner with local education providers to offer work experience for local students and sponsor local community groups and events.
  • Join us on a volunteer weekend for Bush Regeneration in the Ku-ring-gai National Park or head out on a kayak, hike or bushwalk for carbon-neutral activities

Every night you spend in a hostel creates an average of 9 kilograms of carbon emissions
(Certified by the Carbon Reduction Institute).

How can you help?

By going green with YHA, you can help us turn our existing properties into eco-friendly hostels and be greenest hostel network in Australia.
