One of the most stylish surviving examples of that classic design is the beautifully restored Blue Mountains YHA, which plays host to an afternoon of dancing and revelry at the Wentworth Cabaret on Saturday 18 February.

Australia’s premier swing dance troupe, the Sydney Swing Katz, hosts a free swing dancing lesson for beginners at 3pm before taking to the floor for a flamboyant routine of their own, then you can practise your moves when the Katoomba Jazz Quartet belts out their swing classics at 4pm.

Blue Mountains YHA resurrected the Wentworth Cabaret last year more than 80 years after the tradition was established. The Homesdale guesthouse, established 1918, began the cabaret in 1934 by installing a sprung timber dance floor perfect for jiving beneath a grand stage where the house band would throw legendary parties and concerts until 1969, when Homesdale closed its doors.

The building was diligently restored in the original art deco style in 2001 to become the Blue Mountains YHA, retaining its vintage 1920s and ‘30s character . . . including the famous ballroom, which will again be filled with music and dancing just like the good ol’ days this February during the Roaring 20s Festival.
