Lights. Music. Ideas. Vivid Sydney is the reason we Aussies can look forward to winter and the sparkly, subversive wonderland that Sydney will become. This year’s festival calendar has just dropped, promising to be bigger and better than ever. We’ve got you sorted with everything you need to know about this must-do event, including the sweet deal we have for you when you stay at the best seat in the house – Sydney Harbour YHA!
Vivid Sydney 2019 will run from Friday 24th May - Saturday 15th June 2019.
This year, the action will be concentrated around 12 locations in Sydney – all extremely accessible from Sydney Harbour YHA!
They are: the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Barangaroo, Carriageworks, Chatswood, Circular Quay, City Recital Hall, Darling Harbour, Kings Cross, Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
We’re itching with excitement, because the stunning light installations and projects in the works for this year look absolutely insane.
Andrew Thomas Huang has secured the top job – Sydney Opera House’s sails will light up with his artwork Austral Flora Ballet, a “hypnotic fusion of contemporary dance and motion capture technology that brings our botanic wonders to life as never seen before.”
The wonders don’t stop there – Circular Quay will "snow" for the first time ever, with a super-scale immersive and responsive installation Let It Snow. Beetopia will be open for business - a giant glowing bee hotel you can see at the Royal Botanic Gardens. The all-too-real Aussie experience of seagulls flying ominously over you at the beach is embodied in light – you can Watch Your Chips at The Rocks.
Boy oh boy, has Vivid come through with the goods this year! The Cure is leading a stacked line-up, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic album Disintegration at the Opera House Concert Hall for four huge shows. Alas, it’s already sold out, but it just goes to show the massive calibre of artists Vivid has come to attract.
Never fear, there’s still a few tickets left for RÜFÜS DU SOL, who will be headlining shows at Carriageworks from 13-15 June. The legendary Herbie Hancock will be performing at the Opera House on 10 June. Future Aussie Eurovision representative Kate Miller-Heidke will be performing at City Recital Hall on 29 May, and you can catch superstar FKA Twigs at Carriageworks on 9 June. The list goes on forever – check out all the huge acts you can see here.
Ever heard of a director called SPIKE LEE?! That’s right, recent Academy Award winner Spike flippin’ Lee is heading Down Under for the first time to appear exclusively at Sydney Town Hall on 1 June to talk openly about films, politics and race, with a hint of that trademark wicked humour you know and love.
Spike is just the tip of the iceberg – you can see artists, comedians, innovators, speakers and educators from all around Australia and the world. There’s guaranteed to be something to inspire you – you can check out the ideas lineup here.
