The perfect teacher, what’re the chances that the kindest teacher in Matilda inspired you to teach in the first place? Not only is Miss Honey compassionate and understanding with her students, her resourcefulness helped save Matilda from a negligent family to raise a strong, independent, woman… with telekinesis.
Certainly unconventional, Albus Dumbledore is a reminder that the way we learn is always changing and evolving. You may not be fighting the dark forces of Voldemort in the classroom, but everyone seems to have a Malfoy in the class. Does the phrase “wait until my father hears about this?!” ring a bell? Maybe it’s worth breaking out the sorting hat on your next excursion!
It’s certainly hands-on learning when you’re shrunk inside a body or inside a cell! The magic school bus is the ultimate excursion inspiration. You may not be able to turn your students into bats but with some planning and a little extra help from our amazing Groups Coordinators, you can most definitely provide them with an overnight excursion they’ll love.
The fearless leader of the X-Men is the perfect embodiment of finding strength in our differences and an icon for anyone who’s felt a little out of place in the world. Professor Xavier has the uncanny ability to make us all feel like superheroes, even if we don’t have superpowers – and that’s certainly the mark of a good teacher.
Feminist icon Katherine Watson reminds us all that empowerment looks different for every person. The right to choose the direction of our own lives, even if that means sticking to the plans that can seem ‘normal’ or ‘boring’ is still a choice, and one that teachers help empower others to make. For all the year 11 and 12 teachers helping students figure out where to go after graduation, fingers crossed they become just as empowered as Katherine Watson’s students!
Hands up if you’ve ever wanted to jump the desk for a dramatic announcement to seize the day… yeah, us too. It may be showing our age when we list this as one of our favourites, but any teacher that inspires us all to expand our horizons and live more in the present is worth a very special acknowledgement, even if they are fictional.
Smart, strong and absolutely fearless, Professor Minerva McGonagall is ultimate #teachergoals. With years of experience behind her, she’s the dream educational mentor who would certainly be able to give you a few tips to managing even the cheekiest students. You may not be able to wear a pointy hat to your classes, but it’s fair to say that we can all draw upon our inner McGonagall’s to fiercely defend students, stand up for what’s right, and throw in a snarky remark every now and again too.
Jess Day might just be the most realistic fictional teacher out there. Getting emotional displaying her student’s artwork in her share house, dressing up in colourful costumes that’ll put book week to shame, sound familiar? Jess is the messy, real, wine-drinking, movie-watching teacher that we all know and love.
