Spend a weekend in the Blue Mountains and discover the magic that keeps people coming back. Not sure where to start? Here’s out weekender guide to Katoomba!
Pick up a bargain at the op-shops down Katoomba St
Hike down to see magnificent waterfalls in the Valley of the Waters
Stuff yo' face with Katoomba-made goodies
There's so much to discover in the misty mountains, with enough action to fill a whole weekend of activities. Here's a few things you can't miss on your escape from the city...
Hike away your worries... and get some good shots for the gram
Hiking tracks are open, waterfalls are flowing, mountain magic has truly arrived! If you're an early bird, catch the sunrise along Cliff Drive to see Mount Solitary stand proudly amongst the fog that fills the valley below. The cliffside is a ten minute walk from Blue Mountains YHA, so we love to get up, grab a coffee, and waddle down for an early morning rise.
For the adventure seekers and nature lovers, you can't pass up the stunning Empress Falls to get as close as you can to cascading waterfalls that flow all the way to the Valley of the Waters. Check with hostel staff for the best hikes of the day depending on how much time you have, and how much of a hike you're up for - hire a bike to hit the trails, or book in an adrenaline pumping canoyoning tour to learn from the best!
Fill your face with a classic K-town kebab
Once you've danced the night away at The Palais Royale or sung your heart out at the Station Bar, it's time to partake in the great Aussie tradition of ending the night with a delicious kebab. If you've ever bitten into a wrap of questionable quality after a night out, let Katoomba local institution, Cedar Kebab Cafe, blow your mind.
With fresh ingredients, and falafel handmade fresh to order, you'll want to get in early before these delicious wraps sell out. There's vegetarian and vegan options galore, and enough healthy ingredients included to help justify picking up a box of fresh baklava on your way out. If you add Toum sauce to your kebab, do your hostel mates a favour and buy some breath mints, the garlic is strong in this one!
Shop local to do good and feel good!
The Blue Mountains are a home for creatives of all sorts; artists and bakers, ceramicists and designers. Whether you're seeking inspiration in a piece of pottery or in your morning coffee, there's plenty of local haunts to get your creative juices going while supporting the community.
Pick up locally grown fruit and veg from the Blue Mountains Co-Op, or head to Gallery One 88 for new and exciting art, as well as Yoga on Saturday mornings. If you're feeling brave, head over to the Family Hotel on a Wednesday night for the longest running Open Mic in the Mountains!
Reflect on resilience, and get off the beaten track
With the threat of bushfires now passed, witness life come back to the Blue Mountains at its best when you visit Govett's Leap Lookout. A short 15 minute drive or two stops on the train line from Katoomba, look out onto the Grose Valley already bouncing back. It's a sobering walk along the track to the lookout but remains an important reminder to take care of our beautiful country. Make sure to stop into one of the many local stores in Blackheath to help out affected communities.
