Petals and Pyrotechnics Floriade 17

Flowery greetings, petals! Welcome Springtime surrounded by kindred green-thumbs and twinkling, exploding twilight installations at 2017's Floriade.

Banish the winter blues with a spring fling in Canberra this September, as the Floriade flower show adds a splash of colour to the Australian capital.

More than one million blossoms dazzle the shores of Lake Burley Griffin for this month-long flower fiesta, which returns to Canberra for its 30th year between Saturday 16 September and Sunday 15 October 2017.

Join the 400,000-plus green thumbs who flock to Commonwealth Park every year for Australia’s biggest celebration of spring, when 8000 square metres of pristine parkland is filled with colourful and quirky flower displays, gardening tips, music and entertainment, plus activities and workshops for kids and families. And the best part? It’s absolutely free!

Don’t worry if you’re not a traditional flower show type of person, because Floriade also adds some pyrotechnics to their petals at NightFest.

The after-dark extravaganza ignites the floral display with stunning light installations, roving entertainers, an illuminated 35m high ferris wheel, a gob-smacking food, wine and beer bazaar, and fireworks to light up the night sky.

NightFest runs for six nights over two weekends in the middle of Floriade – visit the website for tickets and the full program of events.

The best value place to stay during the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest flower festival? Canberra City YHA, the most centrally located budget accommodation in the capital, which offers an in-house café and bar, rooftop terrace, and in-door pool, spa, and sauna.
