Experience Shakespeare’s work performed in the space for which it was written when the Shakespeare Pop Up Globe literally pops up next to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne.
A full scale working replica of the second Globe theatre - the theatre built by Shakespeare and his company after the first one burnt down - will house an immersive Shakespeare experience that is truly a once in a life time opportunity.
Running from September 21 – 12 November 2017, the Pop Up Globe will perform some of Shakespeare’s finest works - Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Othello and Henry V as well as a specially commissioned new show, Around the Globe in 60 Minutes! on a 360 degree stage. You’ll be able to see the action on stage from all angles, which means there are no bad seats, and no matter where you are seated within the Pop Up Globe Theatre, you’ll be no more than 15 metres away from the stage.
Be dazzled and amazed by canons shooting across the stage, flaming arrows, litres of fake blood pouring out of everyone (if you’re squeamish about blood, avoid Henry V and Othello), hand forged armour and weapons and over 400 stunning period costumes and accessories.
If you want to splurge (and we mean SPLURGE) on your Shakespeare experience, book a Royal Room. Your box is located on stage and is part of the scenery, giving you a unique viewpoint of the play. Alternatively if you need to save some money, the general admission tickets, also known as Groundlings tickets, are standing room only right in front of the stage – where the cheap ticket holders stood Shakespeare’s day. Some actors even head out into and interact with the crowd, so if you’re willing to stand to experience this unique facet of the show, it’ll be worth your while.
For session times and to book tickets, head to Pop Up Globe’s website and if you need somewhere to stay in Melbourne, book your bed at Melbourne Central YHA. Located on Flinders St, it’s not too far from the tram to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl or if it’s a nice day, it’s walking distance! Plus they have some great specials to make your stay worth your while.
