Explore Spotify's new Musical Map to hear playlists from around the world.
We don’t travel to new places simply to see things. We travel with all the senses. Sight. Touch. Taste. And sound. Spotify has just made the ‘sound’ part a whole lot easier.
The streaming service has introduced a new Musical Map that features close to 1,000 cities, all of which connect to playlists compiled to reflect the musical taste of that particular city. The playlists don’t necessarily list the most played music overall, but rather the tracks you’re less likely to hear elsewhere.
“...when most travelers visit another place, they don’t seek out the same food they eat at home, even if they can find it. We travel to experience what makes a place different, and special, by sampling local specialties.
Let’s try the same approach with music, on a big map of the world. You can click any of nearly a thousand cities to hear a playlist of the music that is most distinctively enjoyed there.
What do we mean by "distinctive?" This is music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much. So it is, exactly, the music that makes them different from people everywhere else.”
Musical Map: Cities of the World also automatically updates every two weeks, after analysing nearly 20 billion tracks that Spotify users have listened to, thus allowing listeners to “musically travel the globe and to stay on the pulse of each city’s unique music scene”.
