Studying in the West? Here’s your travel bucket list.

Sure, you enrolled to study hard and learn lots; but we all need a break (or three!) at times. Australia is a damn huge country and we know time and money is hard to come by, so we’ve narrowed it down to five places you’ve gotta see during your time in WA. Drum roll, please!

East Coast

East Coast

Let’s be real, Australia’s East Coast is probably the reason you wanted to travel here – sea, salt and sand every day, tonnes of high-octane activities like surf lessons, skydiving, bungee jumping, boat trips, snorkelling or even scuba diving – and some pretty crazy nightlife, too. Sounds good to us!

The East Coast spans New South Wales and Queensland, from Sydney to Byron Bay to Brisbane to Cairns and all that’s in between - and we’ve got hostels in pretty much every location you’ll want to visit. Have a read of our comprehensive East Coast guide here, and make sure to leave enough time to truly experience the magic!

Great Ocean Road

Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road

Love coffee, food, culture, cocktails, theatre, art, and all ‘round deliciousness? Melbourne is for you. Take your pick of staying smack-bang in the centre of the city at Melbourne Central YHA, or take a leafy, relaxed stay on the outskirts of the city at Melbourne Metro YHA. Either way, you get 20% off your bed; plus we’ve found 50 free things to do in the city – more money to spend on coffee (or espresso martinis!).

Carve out at least two days to take our Great Ocean Road tour. Explore 244 kilometres of the wild and wonderful South Coast, experiencing the iconic 12 Apostles and plenty of other Instagrammable stops along the way!

Uluru

Alice Springs and Darwin

The red centre is our cultural, indigenous heartland; and truly must be experienced to be understood. Whether you’re road tripping from Adelaide or flying in from any capital city, you’ll be astounded by the hundreds of kilometres of deep, red dirt – this is the Australia you’ve really gotta see.

If you time your trip right, you can be dazzled by hundreds of football fields’-worth of twinkling lights decorating the iconic Uluru in the Field of Light exhibition. Whether coming for an event or not, you’ll be immersed in a fascinating, ancient history of people and place; and you’ll be bloody glad you came. Bonus, Alice Springs YHA is built in an old cinema, and screens outdoor movies each and every night. Forget Netflix and chill when you’re in the Northern Territory!

While you’re in the Alice, you’d best pop up to Darwin - how does a tropical wonderland filled with waterfalls, natural rock formations, jumping crocodile cruises and the best Asian-fusion food you’ve ever devoured sound? With a nightlife so crazy you’d swear you were on the East Coast, a war history so intriguing you’d swear you were in Europe and natural waterfalls and landmarks so breathtaking you’d think you were dreaming; Darwin is one for anyone’s list. Plus, Darwin YHA has a rooftop bar, two pools and offers you 20% off. Done.

Have a look at the Litchfield and Kakadu National Park tours we can book for you, because; trust us – you’re going to want to see them.

Quokkas

Perth, Fremantle and Rottnest Island

Imagine a furry little animal that looks like a cat, a wombat and a baby kangaroo all at once; who live happily on their own island with no predators so they’re super friendly and curious. Sounds delightful, yes? Well – you needn’t just imagine; because they’re called quokkas and they exclusively live on Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, Western Australia. And, we can get you there for a day trip of a lifetime (check it out here!).

These little angels aren’t the only reason you should head to the Western capital. Perth is a buzzing city full of nightlife, food, unique experiences and of course the recently renovated Perth City YHA – plus, you can pop along to Fremantle Prison YHA and spend the night in a real life prison. If you dare.
