Australia’s premier winter event attracts more than two million visitors across Sydney to marvel at the web of light sculptures, interactive artworks, and light projects that transform the city’s most iconic landmarks into a vibrant sea of colour.

From the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge to Martin Place, The Rocks, and Barangaroo for the first time, the world’s most talented light artists treat 60 sights around Sydney as their canvas to produce the largest festival of light on the planet.

The Vivid Festival is the highlight of Sydney’s cultural calendar – and the best thing about it? It’s absolutely free!

Vivid Sydney has exploded since its debut in 2009, and the ninth instalment promises to shine bigger and brighter than ever.

The festival expands to Barangaroo for the first time, illuminating the laneways and eateries of the boom waterfront precinct, and has extended its walking trail through the Royal Botanic Gardens, popping out at the Opera House, which will be lit up by dozens of fantastical imaginary creatures scampering around its sails.

And it’s not just the light installations you need to check out, as Sydney transforms into a creative hub with a jam-packed three-week program of Vivid Music and Vivid Ideas. Aussie electronic favourites the Avalanches, UK electropop duo Goldfrapp, and local singer Nick Murphy (the artist formerly known as Chet Faker) headline the 250 gigs rocking the festival, while Shepard Fairey – the brains behind those Obama HOPE posters – is one of the hundreds of thought leaders holding discussions about the future of the creative industries.
